A Creative design direction audit
From where I’m sitting – brand worlds, shoot decks, packaging flatplans, retail rollouts – the brands that are closing aren’t failing on formula. They’re failing on design direction.
The market killed 5 brands in the last few weeks. Not because the formulas were bad. Because the world around the product was weak, generic, or dated. The leak wasn’t in their lab. It was in their visual system.
1. No world, just ingredients
Formula-first creative with no brand behind it.
What’s dead: INCI list as hero. White background pack shot + ‘clean, clinical, effective’ copy. Flat lay with 40px of white space and a generic sans-serif is not a visual identity. It’s a template.
Everyone is clinical now. Everyone is clean. That’s not a brand, that’s a category minimum.
Creative designer/ director POV: We don’t build from the bottle out anymore. We build from the world in.
Mission > Mood > Muse > Material. If you can’t articulate your brand’s worldview in one sentence without mentioning an ingredient, you don’t have a brand yet. You have a SKU.
Where’s the materiality? The texture? The brand code you can spot cropped at 20%?
What we’re briefing now: One story, told everywhere. Founder truth, cultural tension, ritual. One distinctive brand world you want to live in.
2. The content treadmill
No system, no codes, no saves – just trends.
What’s dead: The content hamster wheel. 30 TikToks a week hoping one hits. Trend sounds, “hey bestie slay” voiceovers, GRWM on repeat. Grids with 9 different type treatments, no hierarchy, no repeatable cover system.
Viral stopped being a strategy. It’s rent you pay to platforms that will evict you next week.
Creative designer/ director POV: I’m not interested in content. I’m interested in a content SYSTEM.
2-3 repeatable pillars, distinct brand codes, and a recognisable visual language you could spot on mute in 5 seconds. Owned audience > borrowed audience. Type, colour, crop, composition on repeat.
We are art directing for SAVE, not just SHARE. Educational, opinion-led, client transformation content with POV outlasts any trend.
3. The beige brand
Same type, same crop, same studio. Invisible in 2026.
What’s dead: Clean girl. Beige on beige. Slick-back bun, laminated brow, glossy lip. Neutral studio, same model, same Canela/ Helvetica pairing, same curved crop.
It was chic in 2022. In 2026 it’s wallpaper. Consumers are rejecting overly polished, unattainable aesthetics for human, expressive, imperfect.
Creative designer/ director POV: Specificity is luxury. Luxury is built on tension – hard/ soft, clinical/ sensual, minimal/ maximal.
The best brands now have a MUSE, not a demographic. A specific woman, lifestyle, frustration, wardrobe. We design FOR her, not for everyone. We use language she actually uses in her bathroom mirror.
Generic = invisible. Niche = memorable.
4. The no-hero lineup
No hierarchy, no icon. Everything shouts; nothing lands.
What’s dead: More products = more growth. The chaotic catalogue with 12 lip oil shades and no hero. No hierarchy. No packaging architecture.
When everything is the same size, same colour, same weight, nothing is iconic.
Retail buyers and customers are both overwhelmed. You can’t own mental shelf space when you stand for 20 things.
Creative designer/ director POV: One hero. One promise. One iconic visual.
We are stripping brands back to ONE problem solved exceptionally well. One hero bottle, one signature colour, one ritual shot. Streamlined pathways, considered bundles, intentional restraint. Think The Row, not a variety pack.
Edit to amplify.
5. Borrowed fame, no trust
Celebrity front, no foundation.
What’s dead: Famous face + white label + press push = launch. The celebrity beauty trap is officially sprung.
Audiences don’t trust borrowed equity anymore. They trust expertise.
Creative designer/ director POV: Founder-led, expert-fronted, pro-validated.
If you don’t have lived expertise, put someone who does at the front. The aesthetician, the formulator, the therapist. Real authority beats reach in 2026-27.
The new luxury is quiet credibility – and a visual identity that feels credible, not cosplaying. No big lips, no fake lab coats. Just proof.
6. Pinterest feed, not positioning
Inspo posts with no POV, process or experience.
What’s dead: Posting ‘CHESTNUT MAPLE BRONDE’ inspo pics with no POV. Before/afters with no process. Pretty feed.
That’s Pinterest, not positioning. Social is now a search engine. Your ideal client is searching for “skin that doesn’t filter under office lights” not a colour name. And your Instagram says beige minimal but your clinic has grey LED downlights and Amazon chairs.
Creative designer/ director POV: We art direct the EXPERIENCE, not just the outcome.
Process, consultation, interior, touchpoints, aftercare, typography on your consent forms. In aesthetics, the shift from overfilled, Instagram-face to longevity-led, restrained, ‘you can’t tell, but you can tell’ elegance is everything.
Does your world match across space, print, digital and ritual?
Show me how it feels to be in your chair, not just what walks out of it.
7. Menu, not a world
Isolated treatments instead of a longevity ritual.
What’s dead: Come get tox.’ Transactional, isolated treatments. A menu, not a brand.
The brands winning are selling ecosystems, not appointments.
Creative designer/ director POV: We are designing 12-month rituals, not menus.
Wellness + aesthetics + performance + longevity as one visual and verbal system. Your identity, packaging, clinic space, and content should all tell the same longevity story.
Medical-grade meets soul-grade.
The Creative Brief for 2026-27
Stop asking: ‘What should we post?’
Start asking: ‘What world are we inviting her into?’
Cut: Generic, beige, viral-chasing, product-only, over-polished, inconsistent touchpoints.
Build: A distinct brand world with ownable codes, a hero product with iconic status and hierarchy, a specific muse and POV, a retention-first content system, and a longevity-led ritual that looks the same everywhere she meets you.
